Infusion Therapy Manager (ITM)
Delivering Intuitive Innovation for Infusion Therapy Ordering and Administration
Pharmacists and infusion clinic services within the Department of Veterans Affairs face critical challenges impacting patient safety, operational efficiency, and clinician well-being. Key issues include:
Fragmented collaboration among physicians, pharmacists, and nurses in the development and execution of drug treatment plans
Patient safety risks tied to the manual creation of complex orders, dosing calculations, and administration instructions
Time-intensive and complex order validation processes, contributing to workflow inefficiencies
Excessive waste of medications and supplies due to inefficiencies in planning and execution
Limited data and reporting capabilities, hindering effective inventory management and resource allocation
Clinicians and patients alike benefit from intuitive, streamlined solutions for managing infusion therapy. At DSS, our commitment to patient safety and clinical efficiency drives our innovation. We concentrate our efforts on developing a solution capable of adapting to variations in drug file formats and dispensing regulations. As a trusted partner to VA, we recognize the importance of standardized workflows across diverse medical specialties—enabling clinicians to design and manage complex infusion therapies with precision and confidence.
We developed Infusion Therapy Manager (ITM), a web-based clinical decision support tool designed to enhance the accuracy and safety of infusion therapy ordering and administration. ITM integrates evidence-based protocols into an intuitive workflow, supporting clinicians across various specialties, including Oncology. It is a modernized and expanded version of the VistA Chemotherapy Manager (VCM), currently deployed in over 40 VA health care facilities nationwide.
ITM standardizes the infusion process, helping clinical teams deliver safer, more consistent care by:
Implementing evidence-based, standardized treatment plans
Transmitting chemotherapy and immunotherapy orders directly into VistA
Aligning workflows across all disciplines to ensure coordinated care
Enhancing clinical decision-making to support optimal patient outcomes
